Brazilian jiu-jitsu became popular in the 1920’s with the Gracie Challenge where the Gracie family put their martial art to the test against any opponent of any size from any discipline. It proved to be an effective martial art by relying less on size and more on technique, leverage and timing. jiu-jitsu has been likened to human chess where strategy is more important than raw strength.
Since then the Gracie jiu-jitsu system has been continuously improved and is now one of the most trusted names in martial arts which we are proud to offer in Richmond for the first time. All of our instructors are certified to teach this system with many of them rooted from Brazil where they have trained side by side with the Gracies.
